Design of Whakatane sewerage scheme

At their monthly meeting, Whakatane Borough Council decided to engage Gray to draw up the preliminary plan and estimates for a sewerage scheme. They proposed the scheme be completed in sections and designed to provide for linking up with an extended system to their outer residential area. However, the scheme was put in hold in 1938 due to the rising costs the Council was experiencing and after receiving tenders for the drainage section; the lowest of which was £19,288 or £5,288 above the estimate.
