Ron Carter joins

Ron Carter, a now iconic figure at Beca and in New Zealand engineering, joined Gray Watts & Beca in 1959, before a brief stint in England working for Ove Arup and Partners. One of his earliest projects was the preparation of engineering drawings for a cold store building in Auckland’s Khyber Pass for New Zealand Breweries.

In 1961 Carter spotted an advertisement by an architectural practice seeking an engineer. Upon asking George Beca for a reference he received a reply that he remembers to this day “I don’t want to give you a reference, I want you to come back and join me in the practice. If you prove yourself competent to handle the work and the staff, we will make you an Associate if the quality of your work should warrant it. Success will depend entirely on yourself. We think you have the ability, its up to you to prove it.” In January 1962, at the age of 26, Ron Carter returned to Beca.
