Innovative Design for Todd Motors parts warehouse

Gray Watts & Beca was heavily involved in the design of a large parts warehouse for New Zealand’s iconic Todd Corporation – established in 1884.

The business delivered an innovative alternative design (comprised of hyperbolic paraboloid prestressed concrete shells) to the conventional structures of the day  – the first major concrete shell roof in New Zealand. The ultra thin nature of the structure required particular care, in both design and construction.

Todd Motors chose the shell structure for its lower maintenance costs which has served Todd and subsequent owners for more than 40 years. Today they remain the elegant near-maintenance-free structures they were designed to be.
