Waipuna Bridge: a ‘construction first’ for NZ

Advancement in the technology of prestressed concrete and construction techniques enabled Becas structural engineers to challenge and produce some innovative prestressed concrete bridge designs. This included Waipuna Motorway Bridge – the first to use precast segmental epoxy jointed box girder bridge construction in New Zealand. Completed in 1973, the four-lane, 528m long bridge utilised a self-launching overhead gantry to position the precast segments by a balanced cantilever method.
