Opening of Mangaweka Railway Bridge

Beca was involved in engineering design and site supervision of the longest spanning concrete railway bridge in Rangitikei – Mangaweka Railway Bridge. The 320m bridge crosses the South Rangitikei River in the centre of New Zealand’s North Island, and forms part of a major railway deviation.

Starting in 1973 and opening in 1981, the bridge required the construction of three massive viaducts which are among the highest in New Zealand. The project received the Award of Merit from the Association of Consulting Engineers, New Zealand in 1983 and also the Award for Excellence from the New Zealand Concrete Society Inc.
