First dedicated busway in NZ: Northern Busway

BCHF’s planning team was commissioned by Auckland Regional Council to assess the options for a dedicated busway along Auckland’s busy motorway, north of the Harbour Bridge. However, it wasn’t until 1999 when detailed investigations began.

Construction started in 2004 with the resulting busway being the cumulation of 14 years of research, consultation, design, environmental assessment and planning. It featured a two-lane, two-way carriageway separated from the motorway by a barrier, as well as four busway stations plus a park-and-ride station. The project also involved relocating breeding and nesting sites of the protected NZ bird, the dotterel and continues to be extended to this day.
