Building a city icon: SkyCity and Sky Tower

SkyCity and in particular the Sky Tower have been icons of Auckland for more than 25 years, with Beca involved in both projects from 1994 to 1997.

Involving over 60 engineers and CAD operators, Beca helped deliver the $500 million multi-use entertainment centre just 22 months after construction started – it was the largest private construction project in New Zealand at the time. SkyCity officially opened on 1 February 1997 and was shortly followed by Sky Tower on 3 August.

At 328m high, Sky Tower was the highest structure in the Southern Hemisphere at the time, and as overall design and project managers, Beca helped deliver this landmark six months ahead of schedule.
