Keeping traffic flowing with Victoria Park Tunnel

Congestion on Auckland’s motorways was a constant headache for commuters, particularly between the Wellington Street overbridge and the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Victoria Park Tunnel was the answer.

Beca’s involvement began more than five years before construction got underway; surveying boundaries to enable land to be purchased. Working with the Alliance partners, Beca then led the design, managed the traffic and interacted with a myriad of stakeholders throughout the works. As well as a cut-and-cover tunnel and new motorway lanes, bus lanes, cycling and walking access was added, a new footbridge across 13 lanes of motorway was installed, acrylic noise walls were incorporated, and the historic Rob Roy Hotel was preserved by picking it up and relocating it out of the path of the development.
