Cook Islands gets renewable energy

The Cook Islands Government aimed to achieve 90% of their power needs from renewable energy by 2020. To support their renewable energy goals, the New Zealand Government – through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, installed mini-grid photo-voltaic power systems on six remote islands.

Beca was involved in project managing this logistically complex project which used the latest equipment and smart metering to enable the systems to be supported remotely. By training residents during the installation process, the community was empowered to maintain and operate the system.
