Innovative Beacon System created

The Beca-designed Beacon System is a real-time notification service that helps people assess and manage the impact of earthquakes on their buildings and structures. Born out of lessons learnt from New Zealand’s 2013 Seddon/Cook Strait and 2016 Kaikoura earthquakes, Beacon uses big data that combines live earthquake information provided by government sources with insights gathered from client’s own assets (including physical sensors fitted to their buildings). This innovation dramatically cuts down the time it takes to conduct post-quake assessments, helping with the recovery process.

The Beacon System has gone on to win multiple awards, including the 2018 Most Innovative Hi-Tech Service category at the NZ Hi-Tech Awards.
